Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in Mahu Cantt, Indore in a socially, economically, and educationally backward Mahar family. His father’s name was Ramji Sakpal who was posted as a Subedar and his mother’s name was Bhimabai.

Dr. Ambedkar was only 5 years old at the time of his mother’s death. After his mother’s lap was snatched away in his childhood, his aunt Mirabai raised him. His father Ramji Sakpal remarried a widow named Jijabai to take care of the children.

Child Bhimrao could not get along with his stepmother. Overall, the bitterness of life made Bhimrao stubborn and courageous. Child Bhimrao kept moving forward while struggling.

Dr. Ambedkar was proud, hard-working, and sharp-minded since childhood. In school, Bhimrao was not allowed to sit with other students. He had to sit on a mat outside the class and study. He would bring the mat home after school. Once, a Brahmin teacher named Joshi asked him to solve a maths question on the blackboard. As soon as Bhimrao moved forward to solve the question, the boys in the class shouted – our lunch boxes are kept behind the board, they will touch it.

He was not allowed to touch the school tap and when he felt thirsty, he had to request the school peon or any other so-called upper caste person to give him water. Then he was given water by pouring water on his palms from above.

In those days, it was very difficult for a child considered untouchable to pass matriculation/go to high school. In primary school, Bhimrao’s teacher, a devout Brahmin teacher Krishna Mahadev Ambedkar, who first opened the doors of Shiksha Mandir for child Bhim, recognized the unique talent of child Bhimrao.

He had a positive attitude towards Bhimrao and loved him. He changed Bhimrao’s surname ‘Ambavadekar’, which was related to his native village Ambadve, to the easier to pronounce the name ‘Ambedkar’ later in the register. Baba Saheb Marriage

Dr. Ambedkar was married in the year 1906 at the age of just 15 years. His wife’s name was Ramabai. She was only 9 years old at that time. His wife Ramabai died in the year 1935 due to illness. After this, with the aim of breaking the restrictions of the caste system and promoting inter-caste marriages, he married Dr. Savita Kabir on April 15, 1948, at his residence in Delhi.

After primary education, Bhimrao was admitted to Elphinstone High School in Bombay, in Elphinstone High School, Bhimrao paid special attention to his studies. He had a special love for books, and due to this hobby, he had a good collection of books.

All the students of the class hated him and did not let him touch anything, they forced him to sit at the back of the class, and even the teachers were biased towards him. Once a teacher said with the intention of insulting Bhimrao – “Hey! You are a Mahar boy, what will you do after studying?”

Bhimrao felt very bad that day and he also replied to him on his face that “Sir, what will I do after studying? It is not your job to ask such questions, still if you try to tease me by taking the name of my caste, then I tell you, the result will not be good.

Dr. Ambedkar's Education and Degree

The King of Baroda, Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad met Bhimrao, a promising and talented young man studying at Elphinstone College, Bombay and was very impressed with him. He sanctioned a scholarship to Bhimrao for higher studies and he reached America on 21 July 1913.

He did not have money to get his thesis published for his PhD degree. In 1924, he got his book published by an institution named “P.S. King and Sons” in London. Bhimrao Ambedkar received his PhD degree from Columbia University and he came to be known as Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. After this, Dr. Ambedkar went to London and studied. There, he enrolled himself in the “London School of Economics and Political Science”.

Having completed his MA and PhD from Columbia University, he was allowed to sit for MSc directly. For in-depth study, he started visiting libraries and collecting notes. But in the meantime, the scholarship he was getting expired and he had to return to India.

On returning to India, he was appointed Professor of Economics at Sydenham College, Bombay on 11 November 1918, but after one and a half years, he left the job and again went to London on 5 July 1920.

Before going to London, he started a newspaper “Mooknayak” with the objective of giving a platform of truth to the deprived people and a voice to the mute people. Through newspapers like Mooknayak and Dr. Ambedkar’s continuous efforts, people developed self-confidence. They became aware and got organized. Now such a time had come and such signs had started appearing that the Hindu society had started considering untouchability as inappropriate.

On reaching London in 1920, Dr. Ambedkar got immersed in their studies by enrolling himself in “Gray’s Inn” in “The London School of Economics”. In London, he lived on rent in an English lady’s house. The landlady would provide him with “bread and breakfast” i.e. a place to sleep at night and breakfast in the morning.

After breakfast, he would go out to study for the whole day. In the afternoon, he would have his lunch with just tea and bread or a sandwich. In the library, he was the first to come and the last to leave.

He would spend 17-18 hours every day in studying. In June 1921, London University awarded Dr. Ambedkar the degree of M.Sc. on his thesis “The Evolution of Provincial Finance in British India”.

This thesis highlights the economic relations between the center and the states in British India between 1833 and 1921. After this, he started preparing for the degree of D.Sc. Whatever little capital he had was also spent in buying books. Now he started worrying about future expenses.

For this he stopped taking food, now he ate a full meal only once in 3-4 days, and depended on tea and bread. In October 1921, he presented his thesis on the topic of “The problem of money” at London University and now he started studying law for the ‘Bar at Law’ examination. After taking that examination, Dr. Ambedkar became a barrister.
