Anna Mani Wikipedia
Anna Mani was an Indian physicist and meteorologist. She is also known as “India’s Weather Lady”. It is only due to her hard work and efforts that it has been possible to predict the weather.
Studied physicist from Imperial College, London. While living there, he gained knowledge about weather-related devices. After coming to India, he worked in the Meteorological Department, and in the year 1969, he took charge as Deputy Director of the Indian Meteorological Department.
Anna Mani Birth and Education Qualification
Anna Mani was born in a Christian family on 23 August 1918 in Peermade, Kerala state. Anna had eight siblings and her father was a civil engineer. She has been a curious student since childhood. Inspired by Gandhi’s lifestyle during the Vaikom Satyagraha, she incorporated Gandhian values in her life. Started wearing Khadi clothes.
She has been fond of reading books since childhood. At the age of just 8, she had completed reading all the books in Malayalam language from the public library and by the age of 12, she had completed reading all the books in English.
Anna Mani received a graduation degree in Physics and Chemistry from Pachaiyappa College, Chennai (Madras) in the year 1939. After this, in the year 1940, he received a scholarship for research at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. In the year 1945, he was admitted to Imperial College, London for further study of physics, and from there he gained information about weather-related devices. He has also written many research papers on the Meteorological Department device.
Anna Mani Career
- After graduating from Pachaiyappa College in Chennai, he worked under the great scientist Chandrashekhar Venkat Raman. And did research on the optical properties of diamonds and rubies.
- Anna Mani submitted 5 research papers for the PhD degree, despite this he did not get the PhD degree because he did not have a master’s degree in physics.
- After returning to India from London in the year 1948, he worked in the Meteorological Department of Pune. During the same time, he published many research papers on weather forecasting devices.
- Anna Mani used to handle the weather related equipment imported from Britain. In 1953, Anna was the head of the Meteorological Department and 121 employees worked under her.
- Anna Mani’s thinking was that she wanted to make India independent in terms of weather instruments. She designed about 100 weather instruments from 1957 to 1958.
- Anna built a network station to measure solar radiation. She established a small workshop in Bangalore which used to measure wind speed and solar energy.
- Apart from this, Anna contributed to making a device to measure ozone. For which she was made a member of the International Ozone Association.
- Anna Mani established a measuring tower and meteorological observatory at Thumba Rocket Launching Facility.
- She was so dedicated to her work that Anna Mani never thought of marriage. Anna Mani was associated with many scientific organizations such as the Indian National Science Academy, International Solar Energy Society, the American Meteorological Society, the World Meteorological Organization, International Union for Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics.
- She was on the post of Deputy Director in the Meteorological Department till 1969, after which she was transferred to Delhi. In the year 1975, she worked as a consultant in the World Meteorological Organization of Egypt.
- In the year 1976, Anna Mani retired from the post of Deputy Director of the Indian Meteorological Department.
- In the year 1987, Anna Mani was awarded the INSA K. R. Ramanathan Medal.
Anna Mani Death
In 1994, Anna suffered a stroke and on 16 August 2001, a week before his birthday, he said goodbye to this world in Thiruvananthapuram.
