Bhupen Hazarika was an Assamese-Indian singer, musician, filmmaker and politician. He gained knowledge of music at an early age. At the age of just 12, he had written songs for two films. Received PhD degree in Mass Communication from Columbia University.
He was awarded Dada Saheb Phalke Award, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Academy Award for his contribution to music and culture. And in the year 2019, he was posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna.
Bhupen Hazarika Birth and Family
Bhupen Hazarika was born on 8 September 1926 in Sadiya, Assam, Northeast India. His father’s name was Nilkant Hazarika and his mother’s name was Shantipriya Hazarika. His childhood was spent on the banks of the Brahmaputra River where he grew up listening to songs and folk tales.
His father was originally from Nazira in Sivasagar district. His parents had 10 children, Bhupen was the eldest son among 10 children. Mother loved music, so she used to sing lullabies and Assamese songs to Bhupen since childhood.
Bhupen’s father came to Bharalumukh in Guwahati in search of work in 1929. And Bhupen spent his early life here. His family lived here for some time, then settled in Dhubri in 1932 and Tezpur in 1935. While studying at Columbia University, he met Priyamvada Patel, whom he married in 1950. And in 1952, Tej Hazarika was born as a son.

Bhupen Hazarika Early Life
- Bhupen had a lot of knowledge of music since childhood. When his family started living in Tezpur, Bhupen sang Assamese devotional songs taught by his mother in a public program. And there he was noticed by the famous Assamese film producer Bishnu Prasad Rabha and famous Assamese lyricist Jyotiprasad Agarwala.
- In 1936, Bhupen was taken to Kolkata by Jyotiprasad Agarwala and he recorded his first song at Aurora Studio.
- Bhupen developed a deep love for Assamese culture in Tezpur and started his early singing career in Assamese music. In 1939, he sang two songs for Jyotiprasad Agarwala’s film Indramalati.
- Bhupen had a revolutionary zeal right from his childhood. At the age of 14, he wrote the song Agnijugar Firanti Mai.
- From the beginning of his life, he fought a social battle against casteism and was ridiculed by the Koibarta community for making him a musician of note.
- Bhupen was kept away from the upper caste Brahmin woman whom he loved very much. After a lot of struggle, he married a Brahmin woman, taking revenge against the caste-ridden society.

Bhupen completed his early education at Sonaram High School and Dhubri Government High School in Guwahati. After this, he passed matriculation class from Tezpur High School in the year 1940. And in the year 1942, he passed 12th class in Arts from Cotton College.
He graduated in Political Science from Cotton College of Banaras Hindu University in the year 1944 and had a post-graduation degree in the year 1946. In the year 1949, he won a scholarship and took admission in Columbia University and received a PhD degree in Mass Communication from there.
Bhupen Hazarika Career
- Bhupen Hazarika started his career with All India Radio. After getting PhD from Columbia University, he became a teacher at Guwahati University.
- He worked as a teacher for some time and left the job. And headed towards Kolkata where he established himself as a successful musician. And saw him as a singer.
- During the same time, Bhupen made many award-winning Assamese films like Pratidhwani and Shakuntala and composed songs for many Assamese films. Bhupen Hazarika is also credited with bringing a new trend in Bengali music.
- The song “Jeevanmukhi” started by the famous West Bengal musician Kabir Suman in the year 1990 is believed to be inspired by Bhupen Hazarika.
- Apart from India, Bhupen also wrote and composed songs for many films of Bangladesh, due to which he got international publicity.
- In the year 1993, Bhupen was elected President of Assam Sahitya Sabha. In the year 1967, he was elected as a member of the Nauboicha constituency of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
- Bhupen worked as President and Director of many boards and associations including the National Film Development Corporation of the Government of India.

Bhupen Hazarika Death
Bhupen Hazarika was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai in 2011. It is said that he was suffering from the disease for a long time and was put on dialysis.
Bhupen Hazarika was having a lot of difficulty in breathing and both his kidneys had also failed. Due to this he was admitted to the ICU of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on 30 June 2011 and on 5 November 2011, he died at the age of 86 due to multiple organ failure.
