Julien Alfred Wikipedia: SAINT-DENIS, France, Aug. 4 (AP) — Sha’Carri Richardson’s return to the track suffered a major setback when Julianne Alfred won the 100-meter title in 10.72 seconds, giving St.
Lucia its first Olympic medal. Running in a lane to Richardson’s left, Alfred raced across a rain-soaked track at the Stade de France on Saturday, finishing .15 seconds ahead of Richardson.
The victory was the largest margin in a women’s Olympic 100-meter race since 2008. Richardson’s training partner, American Melissa Jefferson, finished third with a time of 10.92 seconds.
All week, it looked as though Richardson, the reigning world champion making her Olympic debut after a suspension three years ago, was poised for success.

Julianne Alfred emerged as the strongest contender in the field. Alfred, who hails from St. Lucia, an eastern Caribbean island with a population of about 180,000 was one of only two Olympic entrants this year other than Richardson to have clocked under 10.8 seconds.
When Alfred and Richardson lined up next to each other in the semifinals, it was a sign of what was to come.
Alfred won that semifinal race by .05 seconds and then extended her lead in the final. By the 40-meter mark, Alfred had two leads in the field. Richardson struggled in her start and couldn’t close the gap as Alfred sagged at the finish line. Julien Alfred Wikipedia
